Obituary for Sybil McLendon (Spurlock)

Sybil (Spurlock) McLendon departed this life on February 1, 2013, in Wyandotte, Oklahoma, at the age of 97 years. She was born on September 17, 1915, in Aurora, Arkansas, the eldest daughter of William Lee and Nada Ethel (Seals) Spurlock.    She married William Edward "Bill" McLendon on February 1, 1946, in Clovis, New Mexico. They moved to Oklahoma in 1949.     She started her teaching career in the rural systems in New Mexico and Oklahoma and retired while teaching business at Wyandotte High School. She was a member of the Retired Teacher's Organization of Ottawa County and a faithful member of the Church of Christ in Seneca, Missouri.    Sybil was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Bill, her sister, Verval Maxine Nixon Moore, and a niece Tanya Ann (Nixon) Groves.    Survivors include two daughters; Drenda Smith and husband, Richard, of Gretna, Louisiana, and Karen Smith, of Wyandotte, Oklahoma. Four grandchildren; Jarell Ward, Jamie Ward and wife, Sara, Scott Smith, and Rusca Kennedy and husband Cory, Caroline Ward and Liam Kennedy. One nephew, Michael Moore and wife, Debbie. One niece, Lynda (Moore) Cothrren and husband, Tom. Four grand nephews; Dexter Groves, Greg Groves, Chris Groves and Denton Cothren. Three grand nieces; Mandy (Moore) Parish, Whitney Moore and Claire (Cothren) Burke.    A graveside funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, February 9, 2013, at the Seneca Cemetery in Seneca, Missouri, under the direction of Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca with Jake King minister officiating. Honorary pallbearers will be; Jarell Ward, Jamie and Sara Ward, Scott Smith and Rusca and Cory Kennedy.  The casket will remain closed at all times.    Sybil was a lady of strength and virtue, devoted to family and church. She was a respected and loved matriarch, who left family and friends with many wonderful memories.    In lieu of flowers memorial contributions can be made to the Seneca Church of Christ Youth Group in care of the Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, PO Box 380, Seneca, Missouri 64865.
