Listen to Obituary

Mary Ellen (Stevenson) Phillips, age 76, passed away at Freeman Hospital on October 26, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. She was born on April 1, 1949, to Roy "Jake" Stevenson and Mary Ruth (Cox) Stevenson.

On December 30, 1966, Mary Ellen married Charles Wayne Phillips, her devoted husband of 53 years, who preceded her in death in 2020. They built a life together that was rich with shared humor, hard work, and a deep appreciation for their home and family.

Mary Ellen was a member of Christ's Community Church and the Eastern Shawnee Fitness Center, where she found joy in fellowship and staying active. She especially loved pool volleyball, water exercises, and making wonderful friends at the gym.

She is survived by her daughter, Heather Brooke Brodrick, and son-in-law Eddie of Joplin; two grandchildren, Derek Keeling and wife Tawni of Seneca, and Morgan McDonald and husband Quintin of Golden City; and five great-grandchildren: Ellison Keeling, Lowyn Keeling, Harper McDonald, Brodie McDonald, and Weston Metcalf.

Mary Ellen is also survived by her three sisters: Barbara Fohey (and the late Glen Fohey) of Joplin, Ruth Gilstrap and husband Neil of Joplin, and Sandra Smith and husband Randy of Joplin. As well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles Phillips; her parents, Roy and Mary Stevenson; and brothers Gene Stevenson and Bob Stevenson.

She enjoyed taking small vacations and day trips with family. Whether it was a trip to the Bootheel of Missouri to climb the highest peak in the state, or a getaway to Branson to watch Queen Ester, Mary Ellen was always ready to go anywhere Heather would take her.

Each Fall, she looked forward to the start of school-not for herself, but for the return of Bible study with Sandra and Barbara. Their bond was admired by many, and friends at church lovingly referred to them as "the sisters".

Mary Ellen will be remembered for her outgoing nature and her devotion to family and faith.

The family will receive friends from 6 - 7 pm, Thursday, October 30th at the Campbell-Biddlecome Funeral Home, Seneca, Mo.

Graveside services will be held at 10am, Friday, October 31th at Kirk Cemetery with Bob Dart officiating.
